About our patron, St. James Major
Feast Day: July 25

Among the twelve apostles Jesus called, two had the name "James." James and his brother, John, were the first called to be apostles, thus the title "major" was given to him who was called first by Jesus.  He would also be the first of all the apostles to die.  He died a martyr's death by decapitation as ordered by Herod Agrippa I, in the year 44 A.D.   He and his brother John, known as John the Evangelist because he is author of the fourth Gospel, are referred to in the Gospel as "the sons of thunder."  These two brothers along with Peter would often be the three apostles Jesus called to witness special events which many times did not include the other nine.
